Cinderella, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of 28, I left The Netherlands with a one-way ticket to go and explore the world. I had done already multiple long term travels to South-Africa, South-East Asia, The Maldives, Caribbean and more. I was a successful freelance dance teacher and could take my work with me wherever I go. Since then, I have travelled, lived and worked in Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Fiji, Australia, Indonesia and finally for several years in Puerto Rico. Not only I worked as a dancer/instructor, I took on jobs like waitress, babysitter, travel desk operator, store manager, and, kitesurf instructor. I chased my dreams, dived in the adventure fearless and with trust that all will go how it is meant to be in my life.
I met my -now ex-partner- and father of my two kids in Bali, while surfing. Together we took on new ventures like opening a guesthouse, a restaurant and a tourism company. As of today, six years down the road, we are still active with the our small business Across Caribe LLC in Puerto Rico, we manage it from distance with a team of local guides.
We arrived in San Diego on November 2017 after hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico and our tourism business could not generate income any longer. With only a few suitcases, we arrived and had to build our life from scratch. With donations and hard work we managed to start over a life here, unfortunately, we also decided to split ways and stay friends and good parents.
Today, me being a single mom, living in Carlsbad, I try to balance family time with managing Across Caribe Tours a few hours a week, teaching dance and re-launching my own concept of Relaxercise!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all, but nothing good comes easy.
Every business idea I had so far I started with zero capital, therefore, I had to keep things in own hand as much as possible, financial risk and pressure or lack of knowledge on certain areas are for sure struggles. This requires to be creative in problem-solving, delegating what is possible and educating yourself where needed.
Tell us more about your work.
I believe that this fast-paced and demanding society causes majority of the people to spend too much time ‘in their heads’. Demanding jobs, worries, full agendas and the influence of media distracts heavily from connecting with ourselves, we forget to fuel and nurture our body&mind. You may even feel like the stress in your life is out of your control, but you can always control the way you respond. You can take charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems.
Managing your stress levels involves changing the stressful situation when you can, changing your reaction when you can’t, taking care of yourself, and making time for rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, many people cope with stress in ways that only compound the problem. You might drink too much to unwind at the end of a stressful day, fill up on comfort food, zone out in front of the TV or computer for hours, use drugs to relax, or relieve stress by lashing out at other people.
However, there are many healthier ways to cope with stress and its symptoms. Since everyone has a unique response to stress, there is no “one size fits all” solution to dealing with it. Not one single method works for everyone or in every situation, we therefore in Relaxercise experiment with different techniques and strategies. Focus on what makes you feel calm and in control. Relaxercise helps to identify unhealthy stress coping mechanisms and learning healthier ways to cope with stress.
Relaxercise is a fusion of mind/body techniques like Yoga, Pilates, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Imaginary travel, Breathing and Stretching techniques. I use aromatherapy and healing energy when the group size allows it. Each session I choose which techniques I will incorporate and therefore each session is a little different, this depends on the group/event.
There are two options:
one hour- Relaxation Only: We use yoga and pilates inspired moves, stretching and breathing exercises, but also progressive muscle relaxation techniques and imaginary travel as part of our meditation.
three hour- Stress Management and Relaxation: We will explain the fundamentals of stress in a theory-session incl. .pdf handout. After this, we practice a variety of mind/body techniques to relax. We use yoga and pilates inspired moves, stretching and breathing exercises, but also progressive muscle relaxation techniques and imaginary travel as part of our meditation.
> Relaxercise can take place in a studio or on-site. Either laying down on a yoga mat or in a chair if space is limited.
This concept is great for organizations;
A relaxed lunch break, teambuilding day, re-energizing break on a congress or seminar. Also as part of a wellness retreat or event and much more!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Not sure if I believe in luck haha! I think luck doesn’t come knock on your door. I believe more in The Law of Attraction, to create your own luck. To be in control -mostly- of what happens to you in life or at least how you deal with what happens to you in life. Manifesting is something I practice daily and being featured here in SDVoyager is one of the outcomes!

What is the most important lesson you've earned so far on your journey?

Not to have fear to make new choices, to take a leap, a risk, a jump into the unknown, and stepping out of your comfort zone! It means growth, transformation and if you do it from your true heart with full belief, only beautiful and better things can manifest itself.
Every single day when you wake up you’ll have that chance again, to do things different and to make a new choice for yourself.
Too many people get stuck in a life that doesn’t fulfill them, trying to live up to the standards and pressure of society and depending on others to fill the void within. Tomorrow again, you have a choice, to face your fears and cut loose from poisoning, non-satisfying relationships, marriages and jobs. Set yourself free, trust yourself!
I speak from experience. I chased and I cut loose. I left The Netherlands 9 years ago with a one way ticket, a backpack and no itinerary. Crossed 3 times around the globe and look where in ended up; Carlsbad, single mom of 2 and happily creating the life I envision. My backpack now filled with lots of stories, lessons and experiences i collected along my journey.

What is Relaxercise?

"You've probably heard that stress can lead to burnout, health problems, and can in general make it really hard to focus on your task at hand. If you are looking for a way to prevent, reduce and eliminate stress from your daily or work life, then it’s time to Relaxercise.
Instructor Cindy de Groot describes Relaxercise as a concept of a training that combines relaxation exercises with stress management techniques. A typical class fuses breathing techniques, visualisation and progressive relaxation techniques, yoga, pilates and tai chi exercises.
Cindy started her career in 2003 and has since become an international teacher of all things relaxing and reconnecting. Her main goal is to help people better connect with themselves and others through movement and relaxation while motivating them to make healthy life choices and changes, and giving them tools to cope with stress. She originally hails from the Netherlands and now resides in Oceanside.
